“VIEW OF TOLEDO”

Greco Vista de Toledo

This is the name of one of a series of paintings that El Greco painted with the same title and theme at the beginning of the 17th century.

It is an oil painting on canvas which is usually displayed at New York’s Metropolitan Museum with the title of “View of Toledo” and also “Toledo in a storm”.  It is a Mannerist, almost baroque style painting.  The artist took certain license in regard to the distribution of the buildings, which differs somewhat from the reality.  It is a view from the lower part of the city and in it we can see the Alcázar fortress, the Cathedral, the Alcántara Bridge and the Tagus River.  The constructions are illuminated by a kind of phantasmagorical light which gives them a strange and unreal appearance.
